The real faces behind MoD

Exhibited

The UK Ministry of Defence Data and Digital department commissioned Sane Seven to create an internal exhibition for senior leadership and key stakeholders. The brief was to create work that could open a serious conversation about women, identity, and institutional change.

Sane photographed the women who run the British military, from General Dame Sharon Nesmith down to officers starting out — each of them twice, in uniform and out of it.

Side by side, the two portraits look like two different women. They’re the same one. How she looks tells you nothing about what she commands — which was the point, shown to a room of generals.

Major Emma Allen MBE — a distinguished British Army officer recognised for her service and leadership, including her role with 3 (UK) Division Signals Regiment.
General Dame Sharon Nesmith — the highest-ranking woman in British military history and the first to serve as Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, driving transformation and redefining leadership at the very top of the Armed Forces.
Colonel Lucy Giles — the first female college commander at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, paving the way for women in senior leadership roles within the British Army.
